Yes, Safety Made Right For Optus Stadium

Perth multi-purpose stadium is the third-largest stadium in Australia with 60,000 seat capacity. The project took two years of planning, and construction began in 2014, with the stadium completed on time for the start of the 2018 Australian Football League season.

Safemaster was awarded the roof safety contract by Brookfield Multiplex to implement the roof safety solutions due to their expertise in designing and installing various types of fall protection systems across Western Australia’s iconic buildings.

Perth Stadium has adopted fixed roof solutions with 85% of the seating are covered by roof. With a structure of such large proportions, it is inevitable that many plant and communications equipment located on the rooftop areas, or on high-level gantries that require regular access and maintenance.

Following a full site assessment, Safemaster had worked closely with Brookfield Multiplex team to provide optimum solutions that included a series of horizontal lifeline systems, single point anchors, access ladder and walkway systems, offering a safe means of access throughout the stadium for working at heights.

To meet the requirement for the broadcasting needs, Safemaster has custom-designed a suspended platform. The platform is a permanent fixture suspended on the underside of a tier of seating, completed with securely fixed ladder to allow the operator to descend onto the platform.

An implementation strategy has been developed to deliver the project to meet the timeframes, recognising the site construction conditions and operations associated with the project. It was also imperative that the proposed systems fitted the visual aesthetics of the stadium.

Commenting on the project, the managing director Mark Sivewright said “As a West Australian, it a real honour to have been involved and contributed to this iconic project which is close to our heart. The stadium is huge, and it’s only when you’re up on the roof that you fully appreciate the true scale of such a structure. Our inspection and maintenance team are committed to ensure that all of our provided equipment is in good working condition through our annual recertification programme so that the workers using the equipment can do their jobs safely in the knowledge that they are fully protected.”
