The Difference Between Hard Hats & Safety Helmets

In Australia, the terms “safety helmet” and “hard hat” are often used interchangeably, but they are not exactly the same.

Hard hats are traditional, looser-fitting head protection designed primarily to protect against falling objects. They are commonly used in general construction and mining environments.

Safety helmets, on the other hand, offer enhanced features such as chin straps for improved retention and protection against multi-directional impacts. These features make them ideal for high-risk tasks, particularly when working at heights.

In many workplaces, especially following the latest revision of AS/NZS 1801, safety helmet is now more commonly used than hard hat, as it provides multi-directional impact protection.

Industrial Safety Helmets

Industrial hard hats are only designed to protect the head from falling objects and are not adequate to protect the head from uncontrolled falls. When working at heights in Australia, a safety helmet is essential to ensure it remains securely fitted during an uncontrolled fall. A non-releasing chin strap helps retain the helmet on the head and protects against multiple point impacts.

When fall arrest systems are used, an appropriate safety helmet should be worn to protect the worker from head injury during an uncontrolled fall.

ZERO Safety Helmet Range

The comprehensive range of ZERO safety helmets form a vital component of fall protection in Australia and have been certified to a mountain engineering standard. Each safety helmet features their own unique design to suit various work activities, ensuring you stay safe in an accident and can help to reduce head injury.

Frequently Asked Questions

If you need more information before purchasing a safety helmet, browse the frequently asked questions below.

What are the different types of safety helmets?

AS/NZS 1801 specifies four main types of industrial safety helmets based on their performance and intended use:

• Type 1: General industrial safety helmets designed primarily for protection against vertical impacts. These are commonly manufactured from ABS plastic.
• Type 2: Helmets intended for high-temperature workplaces, typically made from heat-resistant polycarbonate (PC).
• Type 3: Bushfire fighting helmets featuring extended brim protection and neck flaps for enhanced coverage.
• Type 4 (introduced in the 2024 revision): Helmets designed to address multi-directional impact risks, providing improved protection against impacts from the top, front, sides, and rear.

When should I replace my safety helmet?

Replacing your safety helmet depends on the impact, damage or wear and tear. However, it is recommended that safety helmets be replaced every 3 years from the date of issue.

There are also some cases where you may need to quickly replace your helmet. These include significant impact, due to internal structural damage, and visible damage such as cracks, dents and splits.

Are Zero helmets compatible with accessories from other brands?

Zero helmets are designed to offer enhanced protection through their own range of accessories, including face shields, visors, neck protectors, and sun brims. In addition to these, the Zero helmets are generally compatible with most work lamps and earmuffs from other brands, a allowing for flexible add-ons. It is important to ensure that any accessory fitted does not compromise the helmet’s core safety performance or interfere with its protective capabilities.

Can I put stickers on a helmet?

Stickers can be applied to ZERO helmets, but only if they use adhesives that are compatible with the helmet’s material, such as non-solvent-based or certain acrylic-based adhesives, and are placed in a way that does not cover ventilation holes, interfere with the helmet’s fit, or compromise its protective performance. Stickers should also allow for thorough inspection of the helmet for any signs of wear, cracks, or dents.

Can Safemaster provide custom logos or branding printing for helmets?

Yes, Safemaster offers custom logo printing on helmets to enhance site safety by helping control authorised access and promoting a strong safety culture. Minimum order quantities apply depending on the helmet type. For more information, contact our team on (08) 6243 3111.
